It may no longer be news to many, but it certainly deserves celebration: congratulations are in order for 29-year-old Princess Opeyemi Bright, who has officially become the youngest mayor in UK history, and the youngest ever mayor of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Mayor Bright was inaugurated on Friday, May 16th, surrounded by her family, friends, and fiancé. This marks a significant milestone in her political journey, having dedicated the past seven years to improving overall conditions in the borough.

After the ceremony, she took to Instagram to share: “Barking and Dagenham is my home, my heart, and my community… being Mayor is more than a title – it's a promise to be present, visible, and to uplift.”It’s clear she intends to lead with purpose, humility, and excellence.
Prior to the beginning of her political career in 2018, she worked as a Trainee Chartered Accountant until she chose to resign after being told by HR that she couldn’t pursue politics alongside her job.  Just six months later, she became the youngest Labour councillor in UK history, representing Eastbrook Ward. Since then, she has served as a school governor and board member for Agile Africa—an NGO focused on equipping youth with tech skills.

Barking and Dagenham is considered to have one of the highest rates of poverty in London, with around 29% of residents living below the poverty line with the black community contributing to 21% of the ethnic makeup in this borough.  Bright’s election is deeply symbolic for members across the country who will look to her as an inspiration for what they can achieve despite socio-economic disadvantages.

She joins an upward trend of British Nigerians such as Kemi Badenoch, Secretary of State for Business and Trade, and Labour MP Kate Osamor making advancements in government and politics.
As Mayor, Bright plans to celebrate diversity, strengthen community ties and drive forward local initiatives. Two charities close to her heart, that are at the forefront of her agenda, are: Ab Phab Youth Club, which offers inclusive activities for young people, and Crohn’s & Colitis UK.  After being diagnosed with Crohn's disease in 2011, she now hopes "to raise awareness, advocate for better support, and bring hope to those affected."

As she steps into her new role, we look forward to welcoming her future achievements. Her journey is already an inspiration—and it's only just beginning.
